Drug classes of Fluvastatin

Mechanism of action of Fluvastatin

A fungal metabolite that inhibits the enzyme HMG-CoA that catalyzes the first step in the cholesterol synthesis pathway, resulting in a decrease in serum cholesterol, serum LDLs (associated with increased risk of coronary artery disease), and either an increase or no change in serum HDLs (associated with decreased risk of coronary artery disease).

Indications of Fluvastatin

  1. As an adjunct to diet in the treatment of elevated total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia (types IIa and IIb) whose response to dietary restriction of saturated fat and cholesterol and other nonpharmacologic measures has not been adequate.

Contraindications of Fluvastatin

  1. Allergy to fluvastatin
  2. Fungal byproducts
  3. Pregnancy
  4. Lactation

Use caution in the presence of impaired hepatic function, cataracts.
