I am a 46 year old female, diagnosed w/mitral valve prolapse in my 20's (I have a heart murmur and my mother had Germa measles in the first trimester of pregnancy with me), possible angina or heart vessel spasm in my 30's. I have not had any major chest pain episodes in about 5 years. A little over a month ago I experienced sudden squeezing pain down the inside of both arms, after pain subsided my arms and neck became limp and I was very dizzy. The whole episode lasted only a few minutes. It happened again about a week and a half ago and then again a few days later. I visited the doctor on Thrusday and am awaiting the results of blood tests. My EKG was normal, they did not check my blood pressure. My mother had High Blood Pressure, Angina, a heart attack in her early 40's and died from a stroke at 61. Could I be experiencing TIA's? If so, are there specific tests I should ask my doctor to perform?
Thank you...

Hi thenunn,
TIA's (Transient ischemic attack) may present with symptoms similar to that of a stroke (CVA) but typically resolves with in a few minutes to with in a 24 hour period. (Unlike a stroke where symptoms are typically present longer than a 24 hour timeframe). Symptoms may include weakness, numbness of the face, arm, leg, one the same side of the body, dizziness or lack of coordination, slurred speech, dizziness, visual disturbances, etc. Temporaryy interuption of blood flow to the brain is the causative factor. Diagnostics may include, a carotid ultrasound (to identify if there is decreased blood flow in the carotid arteries), arteriogram (to identify if there is blockage in one of the other vessels), etc.
Sincerely,
Theresa Jones, RN
