User avatar My blood pressure generally runs on the lower side of normal.

Friday it was 154/75. First time my blood pressure has been high.... Doctor started me on Verapamil SA 120 MG once a day.

I guess for one, I don't even understand what makes that high. While the lower number is normal, but the above number is high... does that mean something more specific than just "HBP"?

Also - is it normal to put a patient on meds for HBP on the first ever occurance of it?

I am 30, female, and I can't shake the feeling this is too young to head down this road.

I am overweight, I have a social anxiety disorder, and tensions are high at work. My father (deceased) and mother both had/have HBP.

If there is any other info you need, please feel free to ask. My follow up visit is at the end of the month.

Thank you

User avatar Hi.

First and only reading of 154/75, I would rather advice my patient to keep a BP record schedule for about 2-3 weeks, 3-4 times a week, at different times of the day.

Next, if the readings show highs most of the times but the levels of 150 to 160 systolic, I would advice my patient to a. reduce weight, b. workout regularly c. reduce salt intake, d. Increase intake of citruc fruits and vegetables, e. Reduce alcohol intake, f. stop smoking.

Next, if above measures do not reduce the BP below 140/90 level, only then I would put her/him on a small dose of Hydrclorothiazide and atenolol combination.

I hope this is useful to you.
