Question: ST abnormalities - effects of digitalis - on ECG

Hi,
I went for an ECG because my sons are being tested for Long QT Syndrome. Mine showed ST abnormalities - effects of digitalis - abnormal ECG. My QT was 400 and QTc was 428. I believe that is in the normal range., but what does the ST abnormalities mean? I am not on digitalis or any other drug. On the ECG it was hard to see where the T wave was, it was almost a straight line with just a few bumps inbetween the Rs, and the Rs were very small.
Thanks,
Stevie

User avatar You are correct regarding the QTc interval. A QTc interval of less than 440 is considered normal.

Regarding the ECG findings, did the statement "ST abnormalities - effects of digitalis - abnormal ECG" come from the ECG machine's interpretation of the ECG? ECG machine interpretations can be misleading in that the machine is not able to identify possible causes of errors in the production of the ECG. For example, if a lead was placed in the slightly wrong place it can produce flattened T-waves as you describe. The machine has no way of knowing this has occurred and interprets it as if the findings are from the heart.

If this is the case, I would suggest you talk with your doctor regarding the results of your ECG. He/she will be able to give you the best interpretation of the findings.

Is it true that the QT interval could shorten after the age of 40 and that I could still have Long QT syndrome. Also can a person be a carrier of Long QT and not actually have symptoms or a Long QT.
Thanks
Stevie
