Question: Blood clot again?

heavenlyangel - Wed Apr 04, 2007 3:56 pm Bookmark and Share

I am now 20 (21 in May) but when I was 17 (almost 18) I was about 5 months pregant when I was put into the hospital with 2 blood clots, one superficial and one DVT. They put me on Lovenox thoughout the rest of the pregnacy and after I gave birth they put me on Coumadin. After being on that for a few months and going to a specialist they did some blood tests and told me everything looked fine and I could stop taking the meds. That it must have just been from the pregnancy that I got the clots since there was really no history of it. They said I would only have to worry about going back on them if I got pregnant again.
Now I have been noticing ( and I don't know if I am just paraniod of it happening again or what) but my left leg (the one that had the clots) always seems to be more swelled up than the right. (not near as bad or big as it was with the clots though) But it is a significant difference between the sizes. Also every once in a while that leg will just get a pain in it and I get really scared and wont let any one touch it,( my fiance will want to massage it to make it feel better) but incase it is a clot, I am afraid of it breaking loose so I wont let him touch it. And for the past couple of weeks every once in a while I get these warm sensations that go runnig down my leg. (the best way to describe it is that it feels like I am peeing down my leg, but on the inside) I have just been blowing them off, not thinking much of it. But then my fiance said something like 'well what if your blood is having small blockages and thats when you feel that warmth is when the blockage breaks free. And it could be related to the clots.' So it got me thinking again and also a little worried.
So I have a couple questions. Is it normal for my leg to still swell up even though the clot is suposed to be gone? And do the warm sensations have anything to do with possible clotting? Do you think I may be getting another clot or is it just still after effects? (or am I just paranoid?)
Thank you in advance!!!

User avatar Dear Heavenlyangel,

One of the complications of having a deep venous thrombus in the leg is destruction of the valves of the veins where the clot was. The function of such valves is to make blood go in a forward direction and prevent it from going in a backward direction. If this happens, the blood in the veins usually stagnates and this leads to a condition known as post-phlebitic limb where there is pain and edema in the affected leg in addition to some skin changes as well.

i think you should be evaluated by your doctor to tell you how to deal with such comolication if this is the case.

i can not tell you without examining you and getting an ultrasound of the legs whether or not you have a new blood clot.

Thank you very much for using our website http://doctorslounge.com and I hope that this information helped.
