Question: Burning Sensation

Carys24 - Sat May 19, 2007 6:06 am

I am sorry, I am not sure if this goes here, but I don't know where else to ask this. I have been having this burning pain from just below my sternum to just above my belly button. It also hurts around my spine in the same place as the front. I have had this pain constantly for the past 3 days. It also look like my stomach kind of pokes out more than usual and when I bend over the pain increases. I am not sure what this is, and I don't have any insurance right now so Idon't want to go to the doctors unless its absolutely neccesary. I am a 24 year old female. The only medication I am taking is Bactrim and have been for about a good year now. Any idea on what this might be? I've tried Antacids and they have not seemed to help at all.
Dr. Chan Lowe - Sun May 27, 2007 2:46 am

There are a few possibilities for your pain. The stomach is in this area and commonly Gastritis will cause pain such as you are describing. While you may get some relief form an Antacid, it is possible that a severe Gastritis may not be helped by Antacids and may need a stronger medicine.

The pancreas is also in this area and is classically described as causing pain that radiates to the back. Pancreatitis can produce your pain as well.

If your pain is not improving over the next few days I would recommend that you see your doctor. There are often clinics that can see patients without insurance for a free or reduced fee. Your local health department can help you locate these clinics if needed.

Best wishes.
