Question: CABG after effects

rothsigns - Wed Jul 25, 2007 6:16 pm Bookmark and Share

Hi, I am a 50 year male who has had triple bypass and 3 years later 3 stents put in. I had a Treadmill after the the Stints(nuclear) and the Doctor said I had improved from the one I had a year earlier(prior to the stents). My question is related to my general health. I am very active, probably 20lbs overweight but I always have chest pains and My left arm and my left thumb and pointer finger tingle all day long, it almost feels like needles poking from the inside. I am going to see a primary physician because I am hoping it might be pinched nerve or something, I am just curious if the chest pain and shoulder pains and tingling could be related to my chest being torn apart during the CABG. I had the surgery when I was 43.

User avatar Hi Rothsigns,

I am not particularly familiar with the post surgical effects from this procedure but it does seem possible that your symptoms may be related to the surgery. When they open the chest nerves get cut. It can take many years for nerves to fully heal. During this time they may cause significant pain.

The arm pain may be referred pain, although the tingling makes me think it may be pain from a pinched nerve closer to your neck.

With chest and arm pain it is important to make sure it isn't coming from your heart. If your doctors have ruled this out is may be worth looking into the nerve issue some.

Best wishes.
