Question: Irregular chest fluttering

 paulxshen - Tue Jan 01, 2008 11:55 pm

18 male, reasonably fit

Occasionally my left upper chest muscles flutter rapidly and irregularly. However, they do not seem to disrupt my heart rhythm. When I check my pulse via the neck, the beats are normal and do not follow my irregular chest contractions. In addition, my episodes are not induced by any stress and are not accompanied by any discomfort. Usually, they last for 20 minutes or so.

Are my symptoms really related to the heart, or are they something else?

Any explanations? Thanks in advance. Feel free to ask for clarifications.

User avatar Hello Paulxshen,

I suspect that this fluttering is not from your heart since your pulse is normal during the episodes. There can be some fluttering feelings due to the heart but typically the pulse would be elevated or irregular.

It may be that you are having some twitching of the pectoral muscles of the chest wall. Most likely this is harmless but it is a good idea to see your doctor and have your electrolytes evaluated. Rarely, an electrolyte abnormality such as low potassium or low calcium can cause these twitching episodes.

Best wishes.
