Question: Blood clot. What is the best treatment?

 Michaelii - Sat May 28, 2005 7:08 pm

My friend was in the hospital for over 2 months with a MAJOR case of severe Pnomnia. He thankfully survived by has muscle atrophy in both legs and can not walk, stand or sit.

To complicate matters, he developed an awefully painful blood clot in his left leg.

Now, physical therapy is virtually worthless due to the pain from the clot and it has reduced his chances of a meaningful recovery.

The facility has him on Heparin, but I read about LOVENOX and was wondering if it, or something else might be more effective.

Thank you!

User avatar Hi Michaelii,
Generally speaking, for a DVT (blood clot) standard therapy for in hospital treatment is IV heparinization. After the problem is resolved, treatment with a medication taken by mouth (warfarin, plavix, etc.) depending on the preference at the treatment facility and physician is used. Lovenox is a medication generally used for treatment at home, given by injection and is quite useful and effective for some people but it is also exceptionally expensive.
Sincerely,
Rntdj
