Question: Dizzy spells

I've had this problem for a number of years, but it was never frequent enough for me to worry (I remember having it as far back as college 4 years ago, but maybe only happened three times in a year).

Anyway, I won't be doing anything in particular, and I'll get a wave of dizziness. It is usually only if I jerk my head or stand up or sit down. If I remain in one spot and focus on one object, the feeling goes away until I move again. This has happened right after meals as well. Eating does not seem to make the feeling go away.

When I was about 5 years old, I remember having an inner ear infection. I can't recall much about what was done, except I believe they sucked a bunch of junk out of my ear, and then put tubes in. I suppose they eventually just dissolved or something.

While I may have only had these spells three or four times a year, they've been occuring rather frequently in the past couple of months. Last week, I had three spells, and this week I've already had four. They're bad enough where I can't really get much done, and can last anywhere from 20 minutes to 4 hours (that's the longest so far).

I went to a doctor a couple of weeks ago, and he suggested that it might have to do with anxiety. He gave me some pills (buspirone), and I've been taking them as prescribed, but they're not helping.

He did do a quick examination of me when I was there, and didn't see anything evident. He looked in my ear with whatever it is and didn't see anything (although I don't know if you can see into the inner ear with that or not), so I didn't really mention my inner ear infection (from when I was younger). Honestly, I've been in great health my entire life and I'm in pretty good shape (I'm in the military), so this is very upsetting.

I know it's not really a lot to go on, but the only thing I can really think of is that infection from 20 years ago. That's honestly the only other time I've been sick enough to go see a doctor.

Help?

User avatar There are many things than can cause dizziness and it's more common than you think, but it is something to be checked.

Have you had a recent EKG? Do you have any other symptoms with it like nausea, ringing or roaring in the ears?

One common cause is vertigo, not dangerous but can be severe, usually accompanied by nausea. There can also be neurological causes.

Talk to your doctor about seeing an ENT and/or a neurologist for further testing.

I have heard a slight ringing in my ear when the dizziness is bad, but I can really only hear it in silence, and it goes away when the dizziness isn't as severe.

I've also had slight nausea once or twice, but I think it might be a symptom of the dizziness itself, if that makes any sense.

Other than that, no symptoms I can identify. I'll be going back to see my doctor on Wednesday, so hopefully he can find something a little more conclusive. Thanks for your help. :)

Just FYI, I finally went and told the doctor I thought it might be an inner ear infection. Apparently I was dead-on. I guess I get them more often than a normal human being for some reason, so they gave me some stuff to take when/if it comes back (it went away on its own this time).

Thanks for all your help. :)
