Question: Question About Side Effects of Coumadin

JohnQPublic - Tue Aug 02, 2005 11:14 am Bookmark and Share

Hello,
I was diagnosed with 3 blood clots (DVTs) in my calf at the beginning of April. Since then, I have been on coumadin. I see that side effects of coumadin could be dizziness and fatigue, but I am now getting to the point where I can barely function. I am so light-headed and fatigued that it is difficult to perform any regular duties. Additionally, I have no appetite and have lost about 10 pounds in the last 2 weeks.
I am a 42 year old male. I also have hemochromatosis and hypothyroidism. My synthroid has been raised after checking my TSH once I begun coumadin therapy.
Is it possible these symptoms are from the coumadin? The hematologist I went to said that coumadin would not cause these effects, but these symptoms are getting progressively worse.
I have an appointment with my family doctor next week. I am wondering if he would go along with doing another ultra sound of my leg to see the status of my clots and then allow to go off the coumadin a couple months early.
Thank you very much for any input.
Sean

Hi Sean,
I'm a 40 year old RN & have an extensive DVT in my femoral vein and have been on Coumadin since Feb of this year. I have had the DVT since March of 2004 and do not recommend requesting to go off of your coumadin until your DVT is gone. My family doctor took me off of my anticoagulant after 4 1/2 months and started me on an aspirin a day and I developed 2 new clots. Back to square one. My advise to you would be to get an emergency appointment with your doctor or go to a walk in clinic or ER & get checked for a small pulmonary embolism, which may cause you to feel lightheaded and tired. You shouldn't be feeling so exhausted and lightheaded that you can't do your usual daily activities. Do you have shortness of breath with activity, a cough or chest pain? I think you should also have your TSH checked again to see how you are responding to your new dosage of Synthroid. As you probably already know it could be due to the hemochromatosis, so you'll probably need to get that checked too. I've been having problems with lightheadedness in the last 2 weeks too, but my blood pressure has been on the low side and I get PVC's (preventricular contractions) so I think mine is due to that. The thought has crossed my mind that I should maybe get checked for a PE too. In fact that is why I came to this site today. I'm getting tired of feeling lightheaded and not being sure what is causing it too. It's not to the point that it's debilitating for me though, it just comes and goes.
I wish you luck Sean ! Let me know how it turns out. My e-mail address is a_z5590@yahoo.com It's nice to have support from someone going through similar problems. They should have an online DVT support group. Take Care
