Question: Heart palpitations - worried

(Heart) - Sun Aug 07, 2005 10:31 pm Bookmark and Share

Hello,
I'm new to this forum and read what the others have said and described regarding their palpitations. My heart skips beats at least 10 times a minute or more, when I am talking with my friends, eating or engrossed in a subject or activity, I don't notice it skip at all. But when my mind is on my heart, I feel is skip like crazy, probably 15 times a minute and it seems to be getting worse every day. I have been to the doctor in the past and their diagnosis is that there is nothing wrong, I disagree with them. There are also times that when my heart skips beats, my heartbeat slows down considerably after the skip, don't know why. Some of my friends tell me that their heartbeats skips 5 times a minute when they actually feel their pulse, but when they don't feel their pulse, they don't notice it, I notice it without feeling my pulse. Then there are times when my heart skips, but as it skips it feels as if there are 2 heartbeats at the same time *thump, thump* This really starting to frustrate me, and I can't seem to pinpoint the cause, I eat right, exercise, take vitamins, get plenty of rest, and happy go lucky without much stress, what is going on?

Any feedback would be appreciated. THANKS!

User avatar Your descriptions of the "double beat" and the slowing after that is exactly what happens during a palpitation. PVCs are very common and not dangerous. They are not a "skipped beat" but actually a premature one, hence the name Premature Ventricular Contractions. I trust you have had a test to diagnose them accurately. If not, I recommend you have a holter monitor or ECG. If you have, and they are definitely PVCs, not to worry. However, if they are really upsetting you or are very bothersome, there are medicines to treat them.

If you drink alcohol, any at all, stop as it exacerbates them, also any type of caffeine or "natural" energy supplement as well.

I didn't know that PVC's that occur like mines (10-15 times a minute) are common? I never got a holter monitor, but went on an EKG test and they told me nothings wrong with me. I have been to the doctor about 4 times and the diagnosis were all the same, its common. This problem didn't occur until 5 years ago and sometimes goes away for about a month or two then returns, this time its worse then ever. I rarely drink alcohol or take something with caffiene and quit taking energy supplements and this still occurs. Furtheremore I understand that caffiene, alcohol and energy supplements can cause palpitations because of the increased heart rate, but my heartbeat is from 65-75 beats per minute and this still occurs. :? :?:

User avatar PVCs are independent of heart rate. Since they are so bothersome and frequent for you, see your doctor about medication to reduce or even eliminate them.
