Drug classes of Hismanal

Antihistamines (nonsedating type)

Mechanism of action of Hismanal

Competitively blocks the effects of histamine at peripheral H1 receptor sites; has anticholinergic (atropine-like) and antipruritic effects.

Indications of Hismanal

  1. Relief of symptoms associated with perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis; vasomotor rhinitis; allergic conjunctivitis; mild, uncomplicated urticaria and angioedema
  2. Amelioration of allergic reactions to blood or plasma
  3. Dermatographism
  4. Adjunctive therapy in anaphylactic reactions

Contraindications of Hismanal

  1. Allergy to any antihistamines
  2. Narrow-angle glaucoma
  3. Stenosing peptic ulcer
  4. Symptomatic prostatic hypertrophy
  5. Asthmatic attack
  6. Bladder neck obstruction
  7. Pyloroduodenal obstruction
  8. Lactation

Adverse effects of Hismanal

  • CNS: Headache, nervousness, dizziness, depression
  • GI: Appetite increase, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain
  • CV: Palpitation, edema
  • Respiratory: Bronchospasm, pharyngitis
  • General: Weight gain
  • Other: Fever, photosensitivity, rash, myalgia, arthralgia, angioedema
