Question: red skin irritation from OTC acne gel

arrawyn - Mon Apr 24, 2006 7:43 am Bookmark and Share

hi there,

OK, i don't have bad acne or anything, just the odd pimple here and there. Lately i've had a couple really bad pimples on my chin.

So last week i went and bought 'Clean & Clear Advantage Quick Clear' pimple gel to help clear up my zits because i'm going on vacation in a few weeks and want to have clear skin!

so anyways, it says for best results to put it on morning and night after cleaning face. But because i wanted my pimples to go away quicker i've been putting it on maybe 3 or 4 times a day! and i've never used anything like this before for pimples, i just usually pop them (i know i shouldn't!) and then scab up!

anyways, it says if irritation develops discontinue use.

So yesterday (or maybe the day before) i noticed around one of the pimples -which was going away anyways before i got the gel, but i put it on to help it go away faster- there is a slight redness of my skin-like around the red spot left by the pimple.

so i was putting witch hazel gel on all the pimples on my chin (there is 3-the one with irritation, a really small dot left by another one and a huge one at the bottom of my chin that popped by itself and is now drying up nicely) to help them as well.

But i've stopped using the gel stuff now that i've noticed the red area around one of the pimples. I'm just wondering if it will go away or is red skin irritation from over the counter acne medication permanent?! i've looked around the net and a lot of pages say that skin irritation is kinda common with over the counter acne meds! has anyone else here had irritation with topical gels/creams?

i'm just wondering if it is just red because it has been irritated by me putting too much of the gel on -because i've had a problem with skin redness (from a cold sore medication i used last year which caused the permanent side effect of widening of the small blood vessels of my skin, leaving me with a slight pink blotch).

So basically i'm just wondering if the skin irritation/redness will go away?! its been a bit dry too but i've been putting moisturiser on. i've stopped using the acne medication anyways, and the witch hazel and just going to use a moisturising facial wash.

Any help/advice that anyone can give would be great! cuz now i'm self conscious about the redness (and i'm quite fair skinned)

thanks,
arrawyn

User avatar Hi arrawyn,
The redness should subside after discontinuation of the substance. However, if this should persist I would suggest an evaluation by a Dermatologist.
Sincerely,
Theresa Jones, RN
