Question: Rash that seems to worsen with menstrual cycle

mommy2boys - Tue Jan 02, 2007 2:04 pm

During my last pregnancy (Oct 04- Jul 05) I developed a rash and it seemed to worsen at certain times of the month. Nothing my doctor has given helps (though it does help with the Itching), I've even tried topical Benadryl and Cortizone10 along with a host of diaper rash creams and even athletes foot cream. The rash is on my inner thighs from about 2 inches above the knee to about 3 inches below the crotch area. It is also on my stomach right on my waist were my waist band for my pants sit. My primary care dr says to talk to my ob/gyn because it seems to worsen during my period but my ob/gyn says to see a dermatologist which my insurance doesn't provide for.
My son also gets a similar rash but less frequently and his in the stomach area just under his belly button to the top of his diaper. His doctor also said to use the topical treatments which had no effect on the rash it eventually went away on its own. Mine though is constant, so any advice would be welcomed.
Thanks for you time.
P. S. I'm 29 been dealing with this for almost 3 years and am not currently on any medications and wasn't at time the rash started.

Hello,

There are certain types of rash and other skin problems (like Acne) that worsen premenstrual and during pregnancy.

These conditions are supposed to be related to the hormonal level in women's bodies. This may increase the allergic reaction to certain medications, food or any other substances for which the person is allergic.

It has been reported that some women (very rare) have allergic reaction to certain hormones that fluctuate during these periods like estrogen and progesterone.

When allergy skin test is performed and are negative to the suspected allergen, a progesterone and estrogen intradermal skin test should be done and will be diagnostic.

The milk hormones contain also different concentration of maternal hormones (like progesterone) and are modified before being absorbed.

I advise you to follow up with your dermatologist and to discus with him this information, he can discuss with or refers you to an allergist for further management.

Keep us updated.
Best regards.
