Question: acne and spleen trauma

my 19 year old daughter was in a car accident in October, and had a level 4 ruptured spleen. They repaired the spleen but there is some permanent damage. Before the accident my daughter had some Acne but had kept it under control with Tazorac. Since the accident her Acne is worse than it's ever been. It has spread all over her cheeks. Her dermotologist put her on a birth control pill, but it's continuing to get worse. Is there a relation to the spleen injury or the trauma and what kind of a doctor will be able to help?

The spleen injury should not have a significant impact; however, the stress of the accident can certainly make outbreaks worse.
Birth control pills are often useful in controlling Acne in girls. It may take several cycles to begin to see an effect from them. Other possible treatments may include an oral Antibiotic aimed at reducing the inflammatory component of the Acne and topical creams such as the tazorac or other retinoid cream as well as benzoyl peroxide creams.
If she hasn't noticed much difference in the next month or so, she should talk with her doctor about trying different treatments or adding another level of medication. Generally, Acne can be controlled but sometimes it takes a bit to find the right combination.
Also, she should avoid washing her face too much. Twice a day with a mild moisturizing soap is enough. Avoid using lotions, etc. as they can actually worsen Acne.
Hope this helps.
