Question: Red rash in groin

chazdg25 - Mon Jan 15, 2007 12:31 am

I am a 44 year old male who had Guillain-Barre syndrome in 1997. As it was an extreme case, I can walk but have extreme balance issues so I also need a wheelchair.

For six months I have had a red rash, almost like a blotch on the shaft of my penis. I went to the dermatologist who said he thought it was an inflamation, not a fungal infection. he prescribed Pandel. After a week there was no change so I called him and he prescribed Nystatin after I questioned him if the rash could be fungal. His feeling was that it wasn't considering the area of the penis involved but decided to try the Nystatin with hydrocortisone. After a few days, the rash was no better so I called him again and he prescribed Westcort cream. After 2 weeks I have seen only about a 30% reduction in the rash. I called the dermatologist again and he said to keep using the Westcort cream for another one to two weeks. I have done so with no improvement.

My question is the following: Is this unusual for the rash to linger like this after a month of treatment. I am meticulous with hygiene so I am certain that is not the problem. Is his diagnosis correct or is there another cream that can be used?

I am taking the same meds for 10 years - GBS (Baclofen, Gabapentin, Xanex). Zyrtec and Flonase for allergies.

Hi chazdg25,
Inquire with your Dermatologist regarding a skin scraping. This would help identify the origin.
Sincerely,
Theresa Jones, RN

Thank you for your response. I really appreciate it. A skin scraping sounds painful. Is it?
Theresa Jones, RN - Wed Jan 17, 2007 11:03 am

Hi chazdg25,
A skin scraping is a nonpainful procedure. Essentially, skin from the affected area is scraped onto a slide and viewed under a microscope. I hope this is helpful.
Sincerely,
Theresa Jones, RN
