Question: Red patch/rash on breast HELP!

BBCITA - Tue Jan 16, 2007 6:34 pm

Hi I am a 24 y/o female w/ no history of Breast cancer in her family. I've had a little pink/ light red patch on my left breast for a long time now. It is really close to the nipple but is not on the nipple. I don't really remember when I got it exactly but I think it's been there for at least 8 months and maybe even a year. I don't think it has grown on size but sometimes it looks more red than usual specially when I scratch on it since it itches sometimes but is not always and is not a persistent Itching. I remember that when I first saw it I thought it was a pimple but then it never went away. When you look closely at the little patch you can see really really miniature small blood-like spots. I never worried too much about this pink patch until I read about Inflammatory Breast cancer symptoms and now I'm really scared. I don't have any pain in my breast or inflammation and the pink patch doesn't feel warm to the touch. It is not scaly or dry either. Also, my breast hasn't grown in size since I saw the patch. But I read that a sole patch can mean Inflammatory Breast cancer. is this true? Could this be IBC? Or are these characteristics of any skin condition??Help!!! Thanks!!

Hi BBCITA,
Although Infammatory Breast cancer would be a definite concern, skin conditions can present in this nature as well. An area that arises, is persistent, doesn't disappear with treatment etc. is concerning. I would strongly encourage you to have an evaluation of the area. Keep in mind that with this type of Breast cancer one of the most definitive diagnostics is a tissue sample of the affected area. Best wishes and keep us posted please.
Sincerely,
Theresa Jones, RN
