Question: Scabies or not?

cbombin22 - Tue Jan 23, 2007 4:28 am

I am a 22 year old female currently living with my parents. They were diagnosed with scabies in October or November and my dad was diagnosed again a few weeks ago. I started Itching around December, although the Itching was minor and only on about 2 small bumps. A doctor told me I "definitely didn't have scabies," and gave me some sterroid cream taht didn't help. But since the week before Christmas, the Itching has spread like crazy. It's on my knees, the backs of my knees, my groin, my hips, and it has spread to my hand in the past few days. I have done the Permethrin treatment 3 times, washed my sheets and clothes in hot water, but the Itching just keeps getting worse! And the rash is barely visible, only in a few spots - nothing like the gruesome images of scabies I found through google.

IS THIS SCABIES OR NOT? I need help! I am awake every night, slathering my skin with all sorts of over the counter cream that doesn't really help. And I don't have health insurance. Help help help!
Theresa Jones, RN - Sun Feb 04, 2007 12:47 pm

Hi cbombin22,
Side effects of Permethrin may cause rash, skin irritation/itching, etc. I would strongly suggest an evaluation by a Dermatologist. There are programs in most states that provide access to healthcare at a reduced cost or free typically based on income. If you need assistance in locating available programs in your area, provide your area and I will do my best to attempt to provide assistance.
Sincerely,
Theresa Jones, RN
