Question: Petechiae Question

Jack24 - Thu Jan 25, 2007 2:12 am

Hello,

A few days ago I visited my girlfriend at her dorm. About 24 hours later, a group of tiny red dots appeared on the front of my left shoulder. Here are some photos of them:

With help from Google, I found out about the glass tumbler test of petechiae, and it seems that that is what they are. I know that meningitis is common in dorms, and I've read that these dots may be linked to such an infection. I hope the appearance of them is just a coincidence, but I would like to know if something else that is dangerous is a likely cause of them, and what earliest common signs of meningitis I should look for.

Thanks,

D.

P. S. I've had a weak, dull Headache the past few days, but I'm not sure if that could be a sign of meningitis...

Hi Jack24,
Some of the more common symptoms of meningitis are servere Headache, Neck pain or stiffness, Vomiting, high Fever, etc. The rash that you are referring to is essentially a septicemic rash (indication of blood poisoning from overmultiplication of bacteria) that begins like pinpricks which eventually run together to form what is very similar to a reddish/purple bruise. Without evidence of symptoms aside from the rash, in my opinion, meningitis would most likely not be my initial impression. Best wishes.
Sincerely,
Theresa Jones, RN
