Question: Red Itchy Welt

I woke up on Thursday morning with what I thought was an insect bite behind my right knee but now I'm not so sure. It itched for awhile and then the itch went away until later in the day. When I looked at it, it is a very dark red line alittle over 1 inch in length and seems to get darker in color as the day goes on. When I first looked at it, I thought I saw two bumps but my husband thinks it just looks like one line. Do you think this is an insect bite or hives? I thought if it was an insect bite it would be going away by now. If I still have it several days from now, do I need to see someone? As always, thank you for taking the time to answer.

User avatar Hi Carol59,

Sometimes bug bites can actually induce hives so it may be that you have both. The itchiness does fit with hives.

You can try some topical benadryl cream or, probably more effective, try taking some benadryl by mouth. If it is hives it should improve with the benadryl.

If it isn't getting better in the next day or two I would recommend you see your doctor.

Best wishes.
