De Quervain?s (subacute) thyroiditis

Subacute inflammation of the thyroid believed to be of viral cause and is characterized by

  1. Premonitory symptoms in many patients.
  2. Characteristic pattern of thyroid dysfunction: transient hyperthyroidism lasting 2-8 weeks followed by several weeks of hypothyroidism and then a return to normal.
  3. Most patients have severe pain in the gland and it is exquisitely tender and woody hard and moderately enlarged.


Disease is self limited.
