Hi wallsy,
If you have experienced 13 hospital admissions in the past year then your Diabetes is not likely controlled. Diabetic Ketoacidosis occurs because the body has insufficient or lack of insulin. This leaves the body with the inability to convert glucose/sugar/carbohydrates for fuel as in normal metabolism to using muscle, fat, etc., for fuel causing the production of ketones. This in turn causes an increased blood sugar levels. Are you on insulin? Many people are under the misconception that Diabetes is "only" a malfunction of the pancreas and that is the only organ affected. The whole picture of Diabetes is it is a systemic disease that affects all body organs. Left uncontrolled, through improper diet, inadequate medications, etc. may cause severe consequences. Although in a very small percentage of people Diabetic Ketoacidosis may occur without an identifiable cause, this condition often occurs in people who have been previously undiagnosed with diabetes, have uncontrolled diabetes, or improperly use diabetic medications/insulin. Certain medications, (ie., steroids for other conditions, etc.) infection, stress and recent surgical procedures of course play a role in elevating blood sugar levels. I would strongly encourage you to have an evaluation by a specialist, an Endocrinologist. Best wishes.
Sincerely,
Theresa Jones, RN
