Question: Sperm analysis results

hysimmonds - Tue Dec 12, 2006 8:00 pm

My husband and I have been trying to conceive for 20 months. I am taking Clomid for a stronger ovulation, and my husband had an SA done.

His results -
Volume 7. 5 ml
Viscosity Normal
Motility 95%
Count 13. 2
Morphology 81%

I believe this condition is hyperspermia but there is no info at all regarding the problem and possible treatment. The volume is correct and is only one ejaculate.

What steps are usually taken to correct this problem?

Also, wouldn't the volume make up for the low count? In theory that 13. 2 * 7. 5 = 99 million, wouldn't that be considered normal?

Thank you so much for the advice!

Hello,

Normal results for semen analysis:
-Semen volume: 1. 0–6. 5 milliliters (mL) per ejaculation.
-Sperm count: 20–150 million sperm per milliliter (mL).
-Morphology:At least 70% of the sperm have normal shape and structure.
-At least 60% of the sperm show normal forward movement.

- It is advisable to avoid sexual activity 2 to 5 days before semen analysis is done to ensure that sperm count will be highest.

it is known that a very high volume of ejaculate may dilutes the total sperm count which affects the chance of getting pregnant.
Causes of high semen volume include:
- prolonged periods of abstinence
- varicocele

However the total count should be higher than 40 millions/ml.

Some medications, alchol, smoking , unhealthy diet may affect sperm counts.

Other tests to be investigated include: testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), or prolactin.

Follow up with your doctor is essential.
Best regards.
