Prophylactic Mastectomy Candidate?

Postby Anders1280 » Wed Dec 31, 2008 8:36 pm

I have a family history of breast cancer, my grandma died at 30, my mom had a dual mastectomy at 24 and my sister one at 19. I had a biopsy done at 24 came back negative, but now have a cluster and going through diagnostic testing in a week. Am I a candidate for a dual mastectomy based on family history?

Hello,

This is a very difficult question to answer. The general approach is to involve the patient in the decision making. Obviously this doesn't make things easier for the patient.

Given the information you have provided you may be at increased risk. However, one important factor would be whether you have are positive for the genetic test or not (BRCA1/2). Many factors are taken together when assessing risk. Please do not forget to discuss with your doctor whether other options for breast cancer prevention are appropriate for your case.

The results of your diagnostic test will also mandate the therapeutic options.

Please keep us updated.
