Left side chest pain

Postby gabesmom » Thu Jun 16, 2005 10:05 pm

Hello,
I am a worry wart and I am having this problem:
Sometimes when I cough I get this weird sudden sharp stabbing pain in the left side of my chest in my breast area. It doesn’t seem to bother me when I hold my chest and cough. Also, I am having this weird heart burn like feeling in that side of my chest. I just have this weird sensation that won't seem to go away. It worries me, and I want to rule out any possibilities of something life threatening or that it could be my heart. Could it maybe be some sort of acid reflux or something? I might add that I am not overweight, and my pulse is in the 70s normally. My blood pressure is normal. I notice the weird sensation in my chest the most when I am stressed out.

Colleen~
what is wrong with me?

Obviously, I cannot rule out something as dangerous as a cardiac cause for your chest pain over the internet, but according to your description this chest pain is probably not secondary to coronary disease.

Since the pain is sharp and can increase with coughing (movement), it is probably not your heart; it is probably musculoskeletal. Try taking ibuprofen unless you have a history of peptic ulcer disease, take it every 4-6 hours and see if you gets some relief. You may have to take it for several days to get full effect; antiinflammatories are accumulative.

For the burning, try some Gaviscon it's the best OTC remedy for heartburn.

If you get absolutely no relief from either of these, see a doctor.
