Valium versus ativan,

Why would a doctor choose one over the other or any other anxyolitic such as meprobamate


It's my only question and I would appreciate a quick answer and I'll get out of your hair.

Hi Sam,

Both medicines have the same mechanism of action. The issue is basically how long the medication lasts. Valium lasts 1.5 to 2 times longer than ativan, in general. If a longer acting medicine is needed, valium is often chosen. If faster onset and shorter action is desired, ativan is better.

There are other medicines in the same class (benzodiazepines) that have longer or shorter durations of actions as needed.
