Hello,
This is really a controversial issue. Some studies showed that people with normal kidney function are not at risk of renal or hepatic damage from high protein diet. Damage from high protein diet is due to high level of their waste products produced by their metabolism.
Other studies showed more probabilities of kidney stones in those receive regular high protein diet. This is in general expected to be more in individuals who do not take enough fluids and do not regularly check their kidney functions and blood pressure levels. Individuals with compromised kidney are at greater risk.
Since he has only one kidney more precautions are needed and I would advise him to check with his doctor the better dietary supplements he should be following and the precautions he should follow if he will continue on high protein diet.
Hope you find this information useful.
