Side effect or disease -

Postby JamesFF » Wed Jun 16, 2004 10:21 pm

Hi, my name's James. I'll just toss this out there for some help - I'm a healthy teenager, I don't smoke or drink, and as this probably relates, I'm a virgin. um, I've noticed that very recently there has been blood in my semen - its very noticeable, the semen which was previously healthy and white is now dark red. Also, shortly after that, there has developed a long rash on the underside of my 'penis stem,' or whatever you want to call it. The only thing I can think of is that I've recently begun the antibiotic Doryx - however, this is not a side effect listed. I'm kind of, well, very worried about why this is happening - if anyone can let me know what this may be, I'd appreciate it.

Thank you.

Hello James,
Blood in the semen may be caused by inflammation, infection, blockage, or injury anywhere along the male reproductive tract. It may indicate a problem within the urethra, testicles, epididymis, or prostate.

Blood in the semen is usually the result of inflammation of the seminal vesicles. If your ejaculate is persistently stained with blood, the following tests should be done: urinalysis and culture, semen analysis and culture, and ultrasound of the seminal vesicles.

James, why were you put on Doryx? You should call your doctor as soon as possible.

I'm on Doryx for my skin (acne) though I will be stopping it very shortly to go on Accutane, anotheroption - if not a rough trip lol. Would it be a poor decision to wait until after I am off of the Doryx to see if the bleeding stops, or is this something that I shouldn't wait for? I'm kind of nervous about both the blood and the possible cures - what kind of permanent damage could result from this? Thank you for replying, by the way :)

James, I don't think this should wait any longer. You should seek medical attention immediately.
