This could be a simple muscle strain in the mid back area. Use of ice or heat and
analgesics would be the first step. Most acute
back pain resolves withing 4 weeks.
If no relief or worsening
pain withing one week, see a physician who can take a detailed history and do a physicial exam.
Mid
back pain can be caused by:
More likely because of
pain with movement:
- muscle strain or sprain
- thoracic spine strain or sprain
- rib cage strain,sprain, or fracture.
Less likely but important to rule out with history and physical:
- Pulmonary etiology (eg.
pneumonia)
- cardiovascular etiology (eg heart ischemia, aneurysm)
- kidney infection
