Left mid back pain

Postby caitbaker021 » Sat Jan 24, 2009 5:43 pm

I have moderate pain in my mid back on my left. It hurts a lot when I try to turn to my left. I have not done anything to strain my back. What could this be?

Hello,
This could be a simple muscle strain in the mid back area. Use of ice or heat and analgesics would be the first step. Most acute back pain resolves withing 4 weeks.

If no relief or worsening pain withing one week, see a physician who can take a detailed history and do a physicial exam.

Mid back pain can be caused by:
More likely because of pain with movement:
- muscle strain or sprain
- thoracic spine strain or sprain
- rib cage strain, sprain, or fracture.

Less likely but important to rule out with history and physical:
- Pulmonary etiology (eg.pneumonia)
- cardiovascular etiology (eg heart ischemia, aneurysm)
- kidney infection

If in doubt, see your family physician for an accurate diagnosis.

Take care and keep us posted.
