Ovarian cysts and hysterectomy.

Postby delenaj » Sat Jul 24, 2010 5:58 pm

I've never been to a gynecologist. I've had numerous large (ovarian?) cysts over the last five years or so which burst 2-3 times per year. The last cyst to rupture has caused lasting pain. I have no intention of having children, so a hysterectomy would not be a problem. Are these cysts reason enough to ask for a hysterectomy? If I chose not to have a hysterectomy and ignore the cysts, could I be at higher risk for cancer?

Thanks for the advice.

Ovarian cysts would not really be indications for hysterectomy in the absence of other problems. They do not put you at greater risk for cancer either. With newer treatments, hysterectomies are not performed at the rate they once were and it's good to avoid major surgery whenever you can.

A gynecological exam would be a good idea.

Best wishes.
