Diabetes at 18 months?

Postby someoneworried23 » Fri Mar 07, 2008 11:39 am

Hello!

I have an 18 month old son and I am worried that he may be diabetic. He drinks almost 2 liters of liquids a day and pee's a lot (probably from so much juice.) Can children at this age be diabetic? His grandmother on his fathers side it type 1.

(18 months, 36.6 inches, 33.4 lbs)

Thanks!!!

Hello Someoneworried23,

It is possible for an 18 month old to become diabetic but it is certainly uncommon. There are other reasons for increased fluid intake as well, such as water regulation problems. The difficulty is figuring out if his increased urination is because he drinks so much fluids or if he drinks so much fluids because he is trying to compensate for the urination (sort of a chicken and egg issue).

I would suggest you have your son evaluated by his doctor. Some screening labs, such as a urinalysis are probably a good idea.

Best wishes.
