2 year old son throws up randomly and after laughing/crying

Postby magnum0625 » Wed Sep 10, 2008 11:16 am

We have a 2 (almost 3) year old son. Around 18 months old he started just randomly throwing up or throwing up after laughing or crying hard. He has been diagnosed with reflux and is currently on Zantac. The random throwing up has pretty much stopped (when he gets his medicine regularly, although if missed for couple days goes back to the random throwing up), however the throwing up after crying/laughing hard still continues. Is there anything else we should look at? Any assistance, advice and/or information would be appreciated. Thank you!!

Hello-

Your son would seem to have an unfortunate combination of incompetent lower esophageal sphincter, for which he is being treated, and a very strong gag reflex. The combination would be almost guaranteed to produce the result of vomiting with laughter or coughing. So long as this is the primary way this result is triggered, there's probably no great danger of aspiration (which could cause a lung infection). Just be sure he gets his medication regularly. The tendency to vomit should moderate over time. The reflux problem will probably require some sort of care for a long time, although sometimes this, too, can resolve or at least go into remission.

I hope this is helpful.

Thank you very much for your reply. Your response alleviates some stress for us as it is basically what his doctor here has told us. It is just nice to get a another opinion. Again thank you for reponding and the information you provided!
