7 month old fell from bed, spot is tender

Postby Amyliz » Sat Jan 24, 2009 1:43 pm

My 7 month old fell from the bed, which is about 3 feet high. We did not find a bump or any red spots when I picked him up. Instead the spot where he landed became swollen and very tender. I called the doctor, she said to put a warm pack on the spot, as long as he as no symptoms I do not have to take him in. I am still not satisfied, should I be concerned?

Hello --

This sort of incident, while potentially serious, usually is not, which is why the doctor has taken a fairly casual approach. If there are no symptoms and if the spot hasn't changed in terms of swelling, coloration, etc., then there's probably no cause for concern. However, one should always be watchful for 36 hours after a bump like this, looking mainly for behavior changes, excessive sleeping, and unsual vomiting. Anything grossly out of the ordinary should send up a flag. Absent symptoms, just be supportive. Good luck to you.
