Quitting alcohol safely

Postby Thanks_for_the_help » Tue Jul 06, 2010 5:07 pm

Hi, I'm currently drinking 8-10 beers a day (for the past year). I'm worried about the possibility of death from quitting. Will spending the next week having one less beer a day increase my chances of not having potentially fatal results from alcohol withdrawl? Thank you.

Hello, Thanks_for_the_help,

Your concern about alcohol withdrawal is valid. To be sure of your own safety, it would be a good idea to consult your doctor about a planned withdrawal from alcohol use. Attending local Alcoholics Anonymous meetings can be helpful through having support during and after your withdrawal period. While decreasing your alcohol consumption over a period of time may be successful, my concern is for your safety while doing so. Medication assistance may make it easier for you, and your doctor can monitor your physical status and any signs of problems due to withdrawal. Abrupt withdrawal is definitely not recommended unless under the direct supervision of your doctor. I hope this is helpful to you. Good luck!
