Purple Knees & Elbows

Postby ruecatt » Thu Sep 18, 2008 11:37 pm

My mom has Alzheimer's, she is 69. Lately her knees and elbows have been turning purple on and off. The past couple of days she has had a headache and today her blood pressure dropped into the 70's but her pulse was 122. Are these two conditons related and does it have to do with her heart?

Thanks for your patience.

Purples knees and elbows reminds me of psoriasis. Is the skin itchy and scaly?

The low blood pressure with high heart rate and a headache is of more concern. It would be good to have her evaluated by a physician ASAP who can check her blood pressure in different positions (supine, sitting and staning). If we see a decrease in blood pressure with an increase in heart rate then we may diagnose orthostatic hypotension. The next task would be to find out the cause (eg medications, dehydration, anemia, cardiac etiology).

Keep us posted.
