Coming off spironolactone and hair shedding

Postby Hoople » Thu May 14, 2009 1:51 pm

How soon should I expect my hair to start shedding once i've stopped spironolactone? I have been taking it for androgenetic alopecia.

Hello,While anti androgens are use with some success in female androgenic alopecia most case studies relate to post menopausal women.About 30% of women report androgen Dependant alopecia before the age of50.PCOS and subtle androgen excess is noticed in a proportion of patients.Nutritional or genetic factors do play a role here.Spirinolactone has weak anti androgenic activity. It has got direct action on 5 alfa reductase the enzyme directly concerned.General duration of therapy to get results is about 9 months. But long term results and as to whether withdrawl would result in renewed hair fall would be speculative.
Best wishes.
