Question: Large hepatic cyst

 Melon - Sat Feb 04, 2006 12:23 am

I am a 62 yr old quite healthy female who has had (20 years ago) gallbladder removed. I have had ulcers (15 years ago). Most of my family members have diabetes and heart, but most have smoked & have been overweight. I have not smoked nor have been overweight (more than 10 pounds at times). In a recent CT scan of abdomen, I am found to have a "large cyst occupying almost all of the entire right hepatic lobe, measuring about 10.4 x8.2 cm. There is also one in left hepatic lobe of 1.2. Spleen normal; both kidneys functioning w/no evidence of hydronephrosis; no evidence of lymphadenopathy or ascites.
I can feel slightly some presence as I am not a large person; 5ft 1, about 130. Am told is size of orange and not much to worry. I have read basic info. My concern: Liklihood of this cyst bursting or something. What would happen if it would? Do you give any credence to Chinese remedies for liver cysts? Thanks

User avatar Hello,

Sorry for the delay in responding to your post.
A cyst is a benign sac full of fluids.
Some of these cysts present at birth while others discovered later in life. thus, discovered incidentally during routine radiological study.

Most of the liver cysts grow slowly and cause no symptoms.
Large cysts causing symptoms are the only indication for medical or interventions therapy. As long as there are no symptoms it is advisable not to treat them to avoid any possible complications.

Follow up with your Doctor is essential, inform him once you feel any pain or GI changes.

Best regards.
