lttlekrn - Thu Jan 26, 2006 10:25 pm Bookmark and Share

i am a 22 year old female no past medical problems, but for the past 2 days i have been experiencing brown mucus-like vaginal discharge that is odorless and has no other symptoms. i have had my period about a week ago and have taken a pregnancy test which reads negative. i am a little worried. i have already gone for my gyno exam this year and everything was good. should i make another appointment?

User avatar Hello,

"Spotting" refers to unexpected bleeding that does not require the protection of a sanitary or a tampon.[1] Normally it doesn’t reach the underwear, but rather is swiped with toilet paper after a bowel movement or urination. The blood can be pink-tinged mucus, rusty brown or bright red. Brown discharge usually indicates "old blood".

Brown discharge is blood that has lost its hemoglobin, which indicates that it is old. It also indicates that it was scant in amount because fresh bleeding will make its way down the vagina in its bright red state in moderate or large amounts.

Normal spotting is what may occur at the very end of your bleeding days. This is also known as post-menstrual spotting. In this case you are just "cleaning out" your uterus/vagina. This may be caused from the uterus not completely shedding the products of menstruation, minor vaginal/cervical trauma during intercourse, hormonal imbalances.

If new symptoms arise or this symptom recurrs next month you should consult your gynecologist.

Best regards.
