Question: Falling Progesterone Levels in Early Pregnancy - Please Help

Dear Doctor,

I am a 30 yr old female with PCOS ,who is 5weeks pregnant. I achieved pregnancy using Clomid on days 5-9, I became pregnant after just one cycle. I am also taking PrimaOne Care prenatals.

On Monday by doctor drew blood to test my hcg and progesterone levles, she later commented that my progesterone was good (did not mention the value) and that my Hcg was 151.5 (I was 4wks 4days pregnant) Then two days later, on Wed. my doctor tested my progestrone and Hcg again. This time my Hcg was 418 and my Progesterone was 35. My doctor commented to me that my progesterone was lower than on Monday (again, I don't know the value, I didnt ask). She wants me to come in next Wed. to test again.

I am concerened that my drop in progesterone signals a potential impending miscarriage. While I know 35 is still well within the normal range, I have read that a drop in any level signifies a bad pregnancy and impending miscarriage.

Do levels generally fluctuate, because my doctor commented that I should not worry and that it might be a "lab fluctuation". Can you explain what that might mean? Also is there any chance my levels will go back up on there own or is it more likely to continue falling?

I would like to avoid taking Progesterone supplements because I have read that they have not been proven to succesfully prevent miscarriage and can actually cause birth defects.

Since this is my first pregnancy, I am obviously very upset by this information, any information you can provide me with would be greatly appreciated.
