Question: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

rose23986 - Tue Jan 16, 2007 3:22 am

I went off of the pill about a year ago, had a few periods, and then no period for 5 months. I went to the doctor and they tested my hormone levels, Insulin level, iron, potassium, etc. Everything came back normal. They gave me provera and I had my period. This was in October. I now have not had my period again. I know that I am not pregnant, so I don't know what it could be. I have no insurance so I can't afford to go on a major wild goose chase. Could it be anything other than PCOS? And if it is, will I be able to have children? Are there any non-medicinal options?
Dr. Chan Lowe - Tue Jan 16, 2007 4:18 am

When you say hormone levels were tested, do you know which ones were tested? If all the tests you mentioned are truly normal, this would make PCOS less likely.

There are a few different groups that have developed criteria for the diagnosis of PCOS. In general they include:
1) The presence of anovulatory cycles (amenorrhea or oligomenorrhea)
2) Excess androgens clinically or measured (The most common clinical sign would be excess body hair.)
3) Polycystic ovaries may or may not be present.
4) Most importantly, exclusion of other causes of amenorrhea should be done.

Hope this helps.

I have the same problem. Did you find out what it is? Please let me know if you did. Went off pill July 2006, had a period every month then they stopped in Dec. I didn't have a period between Dec. and April, took provera got it and haven't had it since. My hormone levels tested good, x-ray showed nothing, pelvic ultrasound was good, Pap smear was good. I have pain in my lower right side, maybe where an ovary would be? All they can say now is to have another ultra sound, the last one was in Dec, so almost 6 months ago. Will it show anything this time? or do they just want more money, and why did it not show anything before?
I'm 22, not pregnant, taken at least 6 test at home and at doctors. Married and no pregnancies, no other major health problems, just high chlorestrol.
