Question: Vaginal ulcerations/Infection.

JQ125ab - Mon Jan 22, 2007 3:27 am

Hi I am a 21 year old female. I have no past medical diagnoses or surgerys and a clear family history, and I am currently on the Nuva Ring contraceptive. Three weeks ago I went to the doctor due to spitting up bright green thick mucous from my nose that was draining into my throat and pain in my ears. He said I just had a bacterial infection and prescribed me Amoxicillin for 10 days, I took the Antibiotic for about 6 days and then didn't get to finsih it. The day after I moved into the dorm I started to experience frequent urination during the night which is unusual for me , I also had about 3 nights of tossing and turning and not very much sleep. The 3rd day after working out I noticed a small red hard bump by the labia of my vagina, I tried to squeeze the bump and nothing came out and it only became swollen and irritated. The next morning I woke up experiencing some discomfort on the bump, I attempted to squeeze the bump again and then got hot water and put a hot paper towel to see if that helped it to burst and by this time I had scratched and squeezed the skin so much it started to bleed. I put vasaline on my labia and later that afternoon noticed that the bump had became infected and there were smaller white blisters (about 4) on the inner labia. These did not burn pus or Itch but only are painful when I walk. I am currently sexually active but have been with the same man faithfully for 4 years and I was his first sexual partner. I have had one other sexual partner but there was protection used and we only were sexually active once. I know this sounds like a herpes infection but I have the symptoms of vaginal thrush. I am just curious as to what your opinion is that this might be?
Dr. Leigh Anderson - Mon Jan 22, 2007 6:33 am

From what you are describing it sounds like you could have Herpes. You can transmit herpes through close contact other than sexual intercourse, through oral sex or close skin-to-skin contact.

These symptoms might include tingling or sores near the area where the virus has entered the body, such as on the genital or rectal area, on buttocks or thighs, or occasionally on other parts of the body where the virus has entered through broken skin. They also can occur inside the vagina and on the cervix in women, or in the urinary passage of women and men. Small red bumps appear first, develop into small blisters.

Other symptoms that may accompany the first (and less often future) outbreak of genital herpes are Fever, Headache, muscle aches, painful or difficult urination, vaginal discharge, and swollen glands in the groin area.

To establish if this could be Herpes your doctor will need to do a culture to determin the diagnosis.
