Question: fever during pregnancy

Archiebald - Wed Jan 31, 2007 10:40 pm

My kids have been sick with a viral thing and Fever for 5 days, I just started with the Fever, its now 99. 3, There Fevers have been as high as 102. 4. How should I treat this Fever, I just took a tynenol to reduce the Fever, is there anything else I should do and if I get the same viral thing and have Fever for 5 days, is that dangerous for the baby. I am 19 1/2 weeks pregnant.

Thanks
Debbie

Colds during pregnancy are not particularly dangerous. There are a few viruses that can be quite serious in pregnancy, such as the chickenpox and CMV. Most viruses, however, are really just an ill-timed annoyance. It's good to let your OB know about any illness that you have during your pregnancy so they are fully aware of any issues that might arise. Fevers that typically go along with colds (101-102) are safe for your baby. Some studies have shown an increased risk of birth defects if Fevers above 102 are sustained for more than about a day in the first trimester. Studies have also shown that after about 16 weeks the risk of high Fevers goes down. If you are having high Fevers (upper 103's or above) it's probably a good idea to let your OB know just for caution's sake.

Treating a viral cold during pregnancy can be a bit tricky. Tylenol is safe. Beyond that, you have to be a bit careful. Many cold medicines contain 3-4 different medications and not all may be safe during pregnancy. Remember that any medication that contains a non-steroidal antiinflammatory (such as Aspirin or Ibuprofen) should not be taken.

A good resource is to talk with your local pharmacist if you are needing an over-the-counter cold medicine. That way you can verify each medicine individually to make sure it is safe. Also, if you ask your OB chances are she has a list of medicines she considers safe that you can have.

Above all, the best thing to help you get better is rest. Drink plenty of fluids-all the old home remedies that make you feel better.

Hope you feel better soon.
