Question: Cyst on ovary

hara9579 - Fri Feb 02, 2007 3:16 am

When do you remove a complex cyst on the ovary? I am 27 and I had a cyst 2 years ago that hemeraged and they had to operate. Now they found a complex cyst on my right ovary mesuring 3. 0 by3. 5 and this wa three weeks ago I am still in alot of pain and can not keep food down. I don't have health insurance so I think this is why they didn't take it out. Please help.

. A sonogram or ultrasound test can determine if a cyst is simple or complex. Was a Transvaginal Sonogram performed to determine that it was Complex?

As Ovarian cysts are frequently encountered. Every menstruating woman develops an Ovarian cyst each cycle. The menstrual cycle requires the coordinated functioning of the pituitary gland, ovary, uterus and the cervix. The pituitary gland in the head produces the hormones, Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH). These hormones are released into the blood stream and are the messengers that tell the ovary what to do.

.
.
Will an operation have to be done?
If a sonogram shows this to be a simple cyst without any internal structure.
If it is only on one side.
If it is less than 4-5 inches in diameter.
If it occurs in an ovulating woman or an early pregnant woman.
If there are no associated findings such as nodules or fluid in the pelvis.

Then wait.

Schedule a reexamination for 4 weeks. If it is gone or getting smaller then it was a functional cyst: either a follicle cyst or a corpus luteum cyst. Nothing more needs to be done. If it persists then a diagnosis must be arrived at surgically.

Women who is on birth control pills should not develop functional cysts. And I am not sure if you are on the Pill, but if you are not on the pill thenit is unable to suppress ovulation, although some women ovulate on their pills. Honestly only postmenopausal women should not develop functional cysts. Women in these groups with a cyst as well as those with a complex or a solid cyst will have to be evaluated surgically. This is the only way to make sure that the cyst is or is not a cancer.

Let me know if you are :

1. On birth control pill, if so what cycle brand
2. What tests were performed Oother than a pelvic exam) was examined ?

Thanks, I am here to help you..

They did an internal ultrasound and a cat scan. This worries me because I am still in so much pain. I need to decide weather my life could be at risk and to try another doctor. Having no insurance is tough.

They told me that it was complex
Dr. Leigh Anderson - Fri Feb 02, 2007 6:30 am

A CA-125 Blood test is used to detect the possibility of Ovarian Cancer, I strongly urge you to get this test done. If your regular physcian trys to convince you that it oes not need to be done, then I suggest you seek another health care provider.

If the lack of Insurance is holding you back from getting treatment, go to the County Hospital who will be able to treat you with having no insurance.

In the mean time have your physcian prescribe something for you to deal with the pain.

Keep in touch

Wow, are stories are so much alike. I'm 29 and found out I have a complex cyst around Halloween. I do have insurance but the coverage is terrible. The pain is unbearable at times and I ran out of pain meds. I called my doctor to see if she would call me something in for the pain and Nausea and she said she couldn't until I had another ultrasound and exam by her. I have a 2000 deductible and do not have that kind of money. You can go to the ER but they won't "treat" you. They give you pain meds and send you packing. I only have one ovary left (hysterectomy 4 years ago) and don't want to lose it. But the gyn said surgery was going to a be must. It's very unfair that so many people need a doctors care and can't get it. So I am just waiting.....and if the pain gets really bad again, I have no choice but to go to the ER for meds. I did have the CA-125 test mine came back within normal limits but then she told me unless the cyst is leaking it will not show a positive. Also told me the test is very unreliable and gives false positives and vice versa. Good luck to you and please keep me posted.

I have been seen in the Emergency room several times now since November 2006 for pelvic pain on my right side. Upon initial ultrasound it was found that I had a left hemorrhaic cyst. That cyst resolved but I was still having pain on my right. I came back in and a small cyst was found on the right and free fluid. Then I began having Fevers, Headaches, lower back and the right sided pelvic pain. Now I have Headaches, right sided pelvic pain, always feeling that I have to urinate, lower Back pain, and indigestion. It hurts more when I sit that when I stand. The last ultrasound that I had said that the cyst was gone, but still free fluid. All blood test and urine test have been normal. Someone please give me an idea of what is going on.
