Question: sex during inactive pills?

gradgirl - Thu Feb 15, 2007 6:34 pm

I have been on combo pills birth control for several years(estrogen/progestin). I am currently 27 (female). While it doesn't affect my periods, I also take levoxyl 1mcg for hypothyrodism.

At my last obgyn checkup, I asked my doctor about sperm being able to live inside the female body for up to 5 days after sex, and if this means that I should stop having sex 5 days before my inactive pills. He responded that because I am on the pill, I can have sex even during my inactive pills because the pill provides continual protection. I know that I don't release an egg on the pill, but I have always been warned about missing pills. Does birth control provide protection during the entire 28 day cycle, including inactive pills?

Thank you.

Hello,

Most birth control pills contain a combination of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. They work through preventing ovulation. This means that, women cannot get pregnant while being on pills (most of them).

Pills induce thickening the mucus around the cervix and may affect the lining of the uterus in a way that make it difficult for the sperm to reach the egg or to attach to the wall of the uterus.

During the days off pills, uterine wall has no more support and bleeding with its shedding occurs.

The pills thus gives protection even during the scheduled off days.

Best regards.
