Question: Still No Period!!!

Hi there. I posted a while ago saying that I hadn't had my period since the end of October and it still hasn't come yet. I've been trying to lose weight to see if that might be part of the problem but haven't been able to (busy schedule means fast food and stress sometimes means eating things that aren't too healthy). But, the past two days I've decided to really get down to it and start exercising again and eating healthy to see if losing weight will bring my period back. I *REALLY* don't want to go see a doctor because other than not having my period, I feel fine. I'm a virgin and haven't been to a gyno yet ... I was hoping to wait until I turned 21 so I really don't want to go. How dangerous is it for me to wait it out a bit longer, try to lose weight and get healthy again? Let me explain my situation again ...
My periods have never really been all that regular, but I've never gone more than two months without it. In September my father was diagnosed with cancer while I was at college. Obviously that was a very hard time being away from him and I was pretty stressed and unhappy. My father passed away in October and of course that completely turned my life upside down. I had a period at the end of October but haven't had one since then. In November I went through the hassle of having to move back home, withdraw from classes and basically just face the loss of my father. Then, in December, I think I started eating a lot more because of the stress and the holidays and stuff like that. I'm 5'10" and now weight 225. If you'd look at me in clothes you would NEVER guess that because I have a lot of muscle from all the sports I played through highschool, but obviously this weight is unacceptable and can be categorized as obese with the BMI index. Could I be missing my period because I'm so heavy now? Also, emotionally it's just been hard, obviously, since the death of my father. I'm somebody who never cries and doesn't really let my emotions out so holding it in has taken a tole on my sometimes. So, I think my body's a litte out of wack becasue of that, too.
Sorry this is so long ... I just want to see if all of that stuff could be the reason I'm not having my period and if it's dangerous to give it another month or two so I can lose weight, start exercizing again, get healthy and deal with the death of my father in a better way. Is this a really bad idea or do you think being really overweight, eating really poorly, and dealing with the emotional pains of my father are probably the reason for it?
Thanks so much again!!

There are many, many reasons for women to stop having periods. Certainly stress can have a huge impact on the menstrual cycle.
Obesity can also be associated with a condition known as Polycystic ovarian syndrome. PCOS is also associated with irregular or absent periods.
If you have had irregular menses in the past it is possible that the extra stress and weight may, indeed, be responsible for your absent period. There are several other possible causes so I would recommend that you talk with your doctor. If you prefer not to see a gynecologist, your primary care doctor may be able to help you as well. It is likely that waiting will not cause a problem; however, there are a few causes that are best diagnosed quickly so I would recomment that you see your doctor soon.
Hope this helps. Best wishes.
