Question: Hypothyroidism, missed period, negative pregnancy test

 cheeko_480 - Tue Mar 24, 2009 4:53 pm

My last period was February 14th. I took a HPT last week and it was negative. I was on Marvelon birth control pills but didn't start again after my last period because I ran out and I was waiting to get another prescription from my gyno (I had my physical on March 11th). I have been having some pains which make me think my period will start soon but it hasn't yet. I was also diagnosed with Hypothyroidism a few years ago. I was wondering if I could have missed my period because my thyroid levels could be out of whack or because of my hormone levels because I'm not on the pill? Do the pains mean I could be pregnant? Can I start taking my birth control pills again or do I have to wait until I get my period?.. whenever that is.

User avatar Hello,
Hormones can fluctuate when you take birth control pills intermittently like this so a missed period can be perfectly normal. It can also be due to thyroid deficiency or just normal variation.

Pain is rarely an indicator of early pregnancy but you should take a pregnancy test before beginning more pills. You do not have to wait if you're sure you are not pregnant. It is usually a good idea to use backup protection during the first two weeks if you begin again now.

Most doctors will call in a refill if you can't get into the office and are about to run out. They realize the risk involved and as long as you are in good health and have an appointment, usually annually, they will help you. Next time this happens, discuss it with your doctor before you run out.

Best wishes.
