Pernicious anemia

(Addisonian anemia)

Autoimmune disorder in which antibodies attack the gastric mucosa (causing gastric atrophy) or intrinsic factor. This leads to inadequate absorption of intrinsic factor and hence a decrease in vitamin B12 absorption (macrocytic anemia).

There is an association with other autoimmune diseases: vitiligo, Addison's disease, thyroid diseases.
