Question: blood tranfusion for 2 different blood type.

 lil_hoti3 - Sat Dec 05, 2009 4:27 am

Hi,

I am just enquiring about blood transfusion for 2 different blood type. Has there been any successful blood transfusion for a healthy person from one blood type to another eg blood type AB to blood type O.

What is the risk? what is the successful rates and how long would the procedure takes?

Has there been any break through for this type of procedure...

User avatar Hello,It was Karl Landsteiner in 1900 demonstrated the blood groups and the reactions. There are genes coding for each blood group. Two factors one on the surface of the red cell and one in the plasma make all the difference. Thus if you have A antigen on red cell in your plama will be antiB.With B on the red cell you would have antiA.With O none on the red cell but in the plasma antiA and antiB.If you have AB none in plasma. Thus theoretically O group can donate blood to all for they have no antigens on the red blood, and AB universal receipients since they do not have antibody in the plasma to react. However cross matching is done in every case to be sure. While lot of work is being made on blood transfusion substitutes basic things remain.Best wishes.
