MONDAY, Feb. 27 (HealthDay News) -- The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) now recommends the routine vaccination of both males and females against human papillomavirus (HPV), according to a policy statement published online Feb. 27 in Pediatrics.
The AAP's Committee on Infectious Diseases reviewed updated data provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices on vaccine efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness, as well as programmatic considerations.
The group found that evidence supports immunizing males against HPV and will change the recommendations in the 2012 Adolescent Immunization Schedule to reflect the revised policy statement. The AAP now recommends routine immunization against HPV for all children 11 through 12 years of age.
"This revised statement updates recommendations for human papillomavirus immunization of both males and females," the authors write.
